5 Common Bridle Fitting Myths

5 Common Bridle Fitting Myths

There’s a lot of bridle myths that circulate within the equine community - from behaviours portrayed from poor fitting to the cost of having a well fitted bridle. So we're going to bust five of the most common myths we hear when it comes to bridle fit.

‘A complete size is fine'. - Let's start with a classic one. I think we can all say we've bought a complete size bridle before thinking it will fit and it's nowhere near. The reality? Around 80% of horses require a combination of sizes across bridle parts. So yes, if you're in that 20% then a complete size will be great - however, mix and match can be the way forward for you.

'I use a flash because it's nicer than a grackle'.Flash nosebands have a misconception around them that they're nicer than grackles. However, a grackle is less likely to restrict airflow and also offers more even pressure distribution.

'Made to measure bridles are so expensive'. - The idea that custom = costly is outdated. When you build your own bridle, you're buying exactly what you need—nothing more, nothing less. That often makes it *more* affordable than buying a full bridle and replacing half of it. Plus, you get a better fit right from the start. Here at Henry James we recognise that you shouldn't have to pay extortionate prices to get a bridle to fit correctly, that's why all of our bridles - whether you have a complete size bridle or a mix and match of pony size - extra full, are the same price.

'My horse is misbehaving but it's not the bridle'. -  You've read that and thought 'surely that's never been said', we can confirm that it has. Common misbehaviours or signs of discomfort such as head shaking and unwillingness to be bridled can be down to poor bridle fit. Poor fit can lead to pressure points, discomfort, and changes in your horse’s way of going. A well-fitted bridle should support soft, clear communication—not cause irritation.

'Anatomical bridles are just a trend'. - This is definitely not the case. Anatomical designs are based on equine facial anatomy and pressure points—they’re about science, not style. For many horses, they offer noticeable relief and improved relaxation in the bridle.
