Bridle Maintenance Through the Seasons

Bridle Maintenance Through the Seasons

Your leatherwork is a big investment—and like any investment, it requires regular upkeep to keep it safe and increase its longevity. But did you know that your tack care routine should change with the seasons? Winter and summer bring very different challenges for leather, from bitter cold and dampness to heat and sweat. Here’s how to care for your tack throughout the year to keep it in top condition.

Winter Tack Cleaning & Conditioning

Winter weather can be harsh on leather. Cold temperatures, fluctuating humidity, and damp conditions can cause leather to dry out, crack, or even develop mould if not properly cared for.

1. Condition Frequently
Cold, dry air can suck the moisture out of your leather. To combat this, apply a high-quality leather conditioner or balm more often during the winter months. Focus on keeping the leather supple without over-saturating it.

2. Smart Storage is Key
Store tack in a temperature-controlled environment. Avoid placing tack near heaters, radiators, or vents, as these can dry out leather unevenly. Damp areas can increase moisture and lead to mould and mildew, while too little can cause the leather to harden.

3. Handle Wet Tack Carefully
If your tack gets soaked from rain or snow, don’t just leave it to dry on its own. Wipe it down immediately with a clean, dry cloth, and once it’s no longer wet to the touch, apply a conditioner. This helps maintain the leather’s natural oils and prevents cracking.

4. Don't Skip Deep Cleans
Even in winter, take your tack apart when needed for a thorough cleaning. This includes scrubbing hard-to-reach areas where dirt, sweat, and moisture can hide and cause damage.

Summer Tack Cleaning & Maintenance

Summer presents its own challenges for tack care—namely sweat, dust, and dry heat. Tack tends to get dirtier faster, and sweat can be especially tough on leather if left unchecked.

1. Clean After Every Ride
In summer, it’s best to clean your tack regularly to remove sweat, dirt, and dust. This prevents buildup that can degrade leather over time.

2. Stick to a Good Cleaning Routine
Be more mindful of the time period between tack cleans. If your conditions are especially harsh—lots of sun, dry air, or excessive sweat—you may need to condition more frequently.

3. Deep Cleaning Still Matters
Just like in winter, take the time to disassemble your tack every 5–10 rides and clean every part thoroughly. This prevents grime from building up in buckles, loops, and other tricky areas.

No matter the season, tack care should always be a regular habit. It keeps your gear safe, comfortable for your horse, and extends the life of your equipment. A clean, supple bridle or saddle doesn’t just look good—it performs better too.

Top tip - investing in a good Leathercare Kit can ease the stress of tack cleaning all year round!
