A cavesson is the simplest noseband: a single padded strap that sits around the nose, below the cheekbone. It does not close the mouth, so it suits horses that go happily without a more restrictive noseband, and it is the noseband a standing martingale attaches to.
It is the traditional choice for flatwork, hacking, showing and young horses, and the cleanest look on a fine head.
Every Henry James cavesson bridle uses our anatomical headpiece, shaped and padded to spread pressure over the base of the poll and sit around the base of the ear, with an offset throatlash that helps avoid pressure on the cranial nerves. Each is made in English Sedgwick leather. For hunting and showing, our hunter cavesson noseband gives a plainer, more traditional finish.
Every part is sold in individual sizes (sizes vary by design), so you can pair a Full headpiece with a Cob noseband if that is what fits your horse. Not sure? Send us three photos through our free virtual bridle fitting, or build your own bridle part by part. Every bridle is covered by our Perfect Fit Promise.
A cavesson is a single strap that sits around the nose, below the cheekbone. It is the simplest type of noseband and does not close the horse's mouth.
As a guide, it should sit roughly two fingers' width below the cheekbone, snug enough to stay in place but loose enough for your horse to chew and swallow comfortably.
Yes. A standing martingale should only be attached to a cavesson noseband, or the cavesson part of a flash noseband, never to a strap that sits below the bit.
Yes. Our cavesson and hunter cavesson nosebands are sold separately, so you can add one to a Henry James headpiece you already own.
