    Choosing a grackle bridle

A grackle noseband, also called a figure 8, crosses over the front of the nose with straps fastening above and below the bit. It is popular with event and jumping riders because it discourages a horse from crossing their jaw or opening their mouth, while leaving the area around the nostrils clear.

    Mexican or figure 8?

A Mexican grackle sits higher on the face, with the top straps fastening above the cheekbones rather than across them. It keeps pressure away from the side of the face and suits horses that dislike a standard grackle. A figure 8 grackle sits lower and is the traditional choice for cross country and showjumping.

Why choose a Henry James grackle bridle

Every Henry James grackle bridle uses our anatomical headpiece, shaped and padded to spread pressure over the base of the poll and sit around the base of the ear, with an offset throatlash that helps avoid pressure on the cranial nerves. Each is made in English Sedgwick leather. Our sheepskin grackle adds a soft lining where the straps cross, for horses with sensitive skin.

    Getting the size right

Every part is sold in individual sizes (sizes vary by design), so you can pair a Full headpiece with a Cob noseband if that is what fits your horse. Not sure? Send us three photos through our free virtual bridle fitting, or build your own bridle part by part. Every bridle is covered by our Perfect Fit Promise.

    Grackle bridle questions

What does a grackle noseband do?

A grackle crosses over the nose in a figure 8, with straps fastening above and below the bit. It helps discourage a horse from crossing their jaw or opening their mouth, without sitting over the nostrils.

What is the difference between a Mexican grackle and a figure 8 grackle?

A Mexican grackle sits higher, with the top straps fastening above the cheekbones. A figure 8 grackle sits lower on the face and is the more traditional style for jumping and cross country.

How tight should a grackle noseband be?

Snug but not tight. You should be able to slide a finger comfortably under the straps where they cross, and the straps should not press on the cheekbones or the nostrils. Our fitters can check it for you through a free virtual bridle fitting.

Can I buy a grackle noseband on its own?

Yes. Our Mexican, figure 8 and sheepskin grackle nosebands are all sold separately, so you can add one to a Henry James headpiece you already own.
