    Dressage Bridles

Anatomical dressage bridles with padded crank nosebands, in English Sedgwick leather. Choose classic leather, patent, or patent with white padding.

    Choosing a dressage bridle

Most dressage bridles use a crank noseband: a padded cavesson with a lever buckle that makes fine adjustment easier. Used correctly, it gives a steady, stable feel without the noseband moving around. It must never be over-tightened, and competition stewards increasingly check noseband tightness, so fit it with care.

    Leather or patent?

Our classic dressage bridle is plain English Sedgwick leather. For the competition arena, the patent dressage bridle adds a high-shine finish, and the patent with white padding gives the crisp contrast many riders like for tests.

Why choose a Henry James dressage bridle

Every Henry James dressage bridle uses our anatomical headpiece, shaped and padded to spread pressure over the base of the poll and sit around the base of the ear, with an offset throatlash that helps avoid pressure on the cranial nerves. If your horse needs one, our dressage crank noseband is also available with a fixed flash.

    Getting the size right

Every part is sold in individual sizes (sizes vary by design), so you can pair a Full headpiece with a Cob noseband if that is what fits your horse. Not sure? Send us three photos through our free virtual bridle fitting, or build your own bridle part by part. Every bridle is covered by our Perfect Fit Promise.

    Dressage bridle questions

    What is a crank noseband?

A crank noseband is a padded cavesson with a lever buckle, which makes small adjustments easier. It is the most common noseband on dressage bridles.

How tight should a crank noseband be?

It should never be over-tightened. The commonly recommended guide is that you can fit two fingers between the noseband and the front of your horse's nose, and your horse should still be able to chew and swallow comfortably.

Can I use a crank noseband in competition?

Crank nosebands are widely used in dressage, but rules on nosebands and noseband tightness vary by organisation and level. Always check the current rules for the class you are entering.

Is there a dressage noseband with a flash?

Yes. Our Dressage Crank Fixed Flash Noseband combines a crank noseband with a fixed flash.

What is the difference between the patent bridles?

The Patent Dressage Bridle has a high-shine patent finish. The Patent Dressage Bridle With White Padding adds white padding for a crisp contrast in the arena.
